passive speaker crossover design

every loudspeaker can be improved

do it yourself or with my help

jjcrossovers.com

With online simulators at this website you can design your passive speaker crossover in a professional way by yourself or with my help. My simulators make design process quite easy and faster. High accuracy of simulators is confirmed by over 5 years of my experience and you can prove it yourself. All simulators (professional and educational) are free. You can also always check my offer of design, design support, consultations and trainings. So now I invite you to review my website.

What do you need?

For the good start you need nothing to play with demos and with the simulators with predefined ideal drivers. Just go to simulators link. I think this is good idea for check your knowledge, skills and experience. I hope the simulators with predefined data can be also useful for educational purpose and even just can give simple fun.

On the other hand, to be able to professionally design a speaker system, first you have to got proper data of your speaker drivers. The best way to get those data is measure them by yourself with measurement equipment like Clio Pocket but if you do not have a measurement equipment or free 650$ at this moment, please do not give up immediately. Rome wasn't built in a day. First you can try obtain professional data from speakers' producer or by net/social media. If it is not possible you can create your own text data by catalog plots. There is also possibility to build your own cheaper measurement equipment if you really want to walk this way.

What you can achieve?

When you have correct measurements you can get crossover dedicated exactly your components with SPL, phase and impedance response very close to your expectations. Theoretically the best is flat SPL response with flat group delay (linear phase coherence). Example of SPL response you can see on picture above but remember in the real world there is no the best solution. You can be very surprised how different for ears are SPL answers different only by 1 dB over only one octave, especially in the middle frequencies.

Simulators vs calculators.

Calculators are very important if you have nothing. Especially serial capacitors protect drivers from destruction for middle and high sections. But these days you have also simulators. You can play with them also with ideal speaker data as assumes the calculators and if you inquisitive, I think you fast understand a discrepancy between the calculators and the real worlds where real speakers' answers are far from ideals.

Why crossover is so important?

Loudspeaker crossover is very often one of elements of system which one is not duly appreciated but every chain is as weak as its weakest link. It does not make sense to use very good signal source, amplifier, very meticulously selected speakers, sophisticated cabinet with carefully matched bass-reflex and even gold cables when you simply do not at least enough appreciate crossover. Especially, crossover very often can also partially or fully correct disadvantages mentioned elements which ones very rarely are perfect.

It is also good to understand that if you have really good crossover for one set of elements when you change for example only one speaker driver you almost certainly should also change crossover schema to keep quality of your loudspeaker.

How to start?

Simply read initiation subpages and play with simulators with predefined data.
